Role of Director General

The Director General has, under the Public Service Management Act responsibility for the day to day running of the Irish Prison Service.
Today the Irish Prison Service has responsibility for 3,500 prison staff and approx 4,000 prisoners across 14 institutions ( a link to each institution can be found on our home page ) The annual budget for the Irish Prison Service in 2008 was approx € 392m

 

Statutory Framework

The Irish Prison Service operates as an executive office of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, pending enactment of legislation to establish it as a statutory agency, and operates within a statutory framework comprising; the Prisons Acts, relevant provisions in other statutes such as the Prisons (Visiting Committees) Act, 1925, the Criminal Justice Act, 1960, the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1997 and the Transfer of Sentenced Persons Acts 1995 and 1997; and The Prison Rules 2007 .

The Prison Service must also take due account of the UN and European Conventions on Human Rights, UN Standard Minimum Rules, the UN Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, the UN Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the European Convention for the prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

 

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Irish Prison Service is to provide safe, secure and humane custody for people who are sent to prison. The Service is committed to managing custodial sentences in a way which encourages and supports prisoners in their endeavouring to live law abiding and purposeful lives as valued members of society.
