Covid-19 in the Prison System

11th April 2022

The Irish Prison Service can confirm that a number of prisoners have tested positive for Covid-19 in Cork and Arbour Hill Prison. The total number of prisoners that have tested positive for Covid-19 across the prion estate since the beginning of the pandemic is 1,428. Given the current level of prevalence of the virus in the community the Irish Prison Service now faces an ongoing challenge in continuing to keep prisoners safe from infection.

The Service is working closely with Public Health, HSE with regard to the management of the current outbreaks including testing arrangements for staff and prisoners, if required. At all points, the Irish Prison Service is guided by advice from local Public Health clinicians and meetings with Public Health are convened at regular intervals throughout the course of each outbreak.

Cork Prison (04/04/2022)

The Irish Prison Service can confirm (92) prisoners from the A and B Division in Cork Prison have tested positive for Covid-19. A Review Team has been established and as a precautionary measure all prisoners who require testing on A and B division have been tested. A restricted regime will be in place until all test results are returned.

Arbour Hill (05/04/2022)

The Irish Prison Service can confirm (42) prisoners have tested positive for Covid-19 in Arbour Hill Prison. A Review Team has been established and as a precautionary measure mass tested all prisoners and are awaiting all test results. A restricted regime will be in place until all test results are returned.
