Dental Services

The Irish Prison Service provides dental treatment to prisoners of an equivalent standard to that available in the general community covered by the GMS Dental Scheme. It is committed to ensuring that every prisoner has access to the services of a qualified dentist.

In-reach Dental Services are provided throughout the Prison Estate with the exception of Shelton Abbey where prisoners attend an external dental provider. The Dublin Dentist University Hospital (DDUH) provides routine and emergency dental care services in each of the Dublin Prisons while routine and emergency dental care services are provided to prisoners outside of Dublin by private dental contractors. The DDUH also provides advice to Dental Providers working in prisons outside of Dublin.

Dental Clinics are scheduled on a regular basis and take place 2/3 per week in the larger prisons. Additional Clinics are provided if required to meet the needs of the prisoner population.
